This collection contains papers representing primarily Samuel and Joseph Ellery Foxcroft. The papers of Samuel Foxcroft include deeds for land in New Gloucester and Jay, Me., church business, an account book indicating money advanced to his son for specific purposes, for the period 1797 to 1803, and correspondence with his attorneys Andrew Burley ( - ) and William Symmes (1760-1807) concerning a lawsuit over land owned by Foxcroft in Waterborough, Me., that had been settled by squatters. Several letters also concern a grant to Foxcroft of Sebascodegan Island (Harpswell, Me.) by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, conditions on the island, and a letter from Eli Forbes (1726-1804) referring to the publication of Foxcroft's _New Year's Gift_ in 1798. The papers of Joseph Ellery Foxcroft include his resignation as lieutenant-colonel of a Massachusetts militia regiment, and several letters relating in detail the political situation in Maine, ca. 1820. They include suggestions by Rev. Elijah Kellogg (1761-1842) to Foxcroft (who attended the state Constitutional Convention) on the advantages of town representation vs. district representation in the new state's constitution, and comments from Sen. John Chandler (1761-1842), Rep. Josiah Willis Seaver (1742-1841), and the mayor of Portland, Me., Andrew Leonard Emerson (1802-1835) concerning schisms in the state's Democratic-Republican Party, prospective candidates for governor, nominating convention details, and Foxcroft's appointment as sheriff of Cumberland County.
